Blondes got Barbie, we got Chucky
Barbie was created as an idealism of perfection – blonde, tanned, unobtainable proportions and preppy clothes. She helped to perpetuate the stereotype that blondes are more beautiful and was the influential yardstick of perceived beauty for many decades. She certainly didn’t represent ordinary woman let alone ginger women.
Now, on the other end of the stereotypical spectrum, gingers were not so lucky. We got an effigy modelled on our stereotype –the evil Chucky doll. Porcelain dolls are always creepy but then add in the fact that ginger haired Chucky was possessed by the soul of a serial killer and you have a recipe for a reign of terror. Chucky might have been dressed in cute little dungarees but he had murder in his heart and a 10” knife in his hand. As if we didn’t have enough ginger nightmares to keep us awake at night! And, to add salt to the wound, it’s now off limits for a ginger to wear dungarees unless it’s Halloween. Thanks Chucky!
