The Martyr of the Solway
Artist: John Everett Millais
This painting portrays a sad tale of a young Scottish girl with beautiful red hair who refused to swear an oath declaring the King of England as Head of the Church. She and a friend were chained to stone stakes in Solway Firth, forced to drown in the tide. She is depicted here by the Pre-Raphaelite artist John Everett Millais as a martyr going to her death. She was originally nude, but Millais had to add clothes in order not to offend the Victorian public.
