Self portrait – Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh was the epitome of the tortured artist, addled with absinthe; he eventually committed himself to a sanatorium in St.-Rémy, where he painted this self-portrait. He is instantly recognised by his ginger hair and flaming red beard, his gaunt features, and haunted gaze. Using background colour that enhances the vibrancy of his hair is notable in many of his self-portraits. Van Gogh painted over 43 such paintings during his lifetime, often because he could not afford to pay for models.  Although one of the greatest Post Impressionist painters he remained virtually penniless during his lifetime. His tortured life ended in a bizarre scenario as he was purported to have shot himself in the chest while out painting in a meadow. It is now on debate whether this was suicide or foul play; read more.
Today, Vincent van Gogh is considered the greatest Dutch painter after Rembrandt. He completed more than 2,100 works, consisting of 860 oil paintings and more than 1,300 watercolors, drawings and sketches. Several of his paintings rank among the most expensive in the world; “Irises” sold for a record $53.9 million, and his “Portrait of Dr. Gachet” sold for $82.5 million.
